The U.S. got the better part of the deal. They acquired Texas as well as California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, most of Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma.  The U.S. grew in size as more settlers moved into these new territories.  Mexicans and Native Americans faced difficulty as they lost their citizenship and their rights.  Some Mexicans wanted the restoration of Mexican rule while others wanted American citizenship.

The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo required Mexico to cede California and New Mexico to the United States. The United States agreed to pay Mexico $15 million and to respect Spanish-speaking people in California and New Mexico. English-speaking people in California often did not treat Mexican Americans well. Spanish-speakers had fewer legal rights than did English-speaking people in California. A few years after the war’s end, the United States bought more land from Mexico and used it to complete a railroad. This expanded the United States to the Pacific Ocean and fulfilled the goal of Manifest Destiny.
