Many of the antiviral drugs currently used to treat HIV/AIDS also interfere with an enzyme that helps mitochondria multiply. Treatment can therefore result in a decrease in the number of mitochondria found in certain tissues. Given this information, which of the following might you expect to see in patients treated with antiviral drugs?A. an increase in oxidative phosphorylationB. an increase in phosphofructokinase activityC. an increase in lactic acid levelsD. an increase in NADH dehydrogenase activity

Respuesta :

The answer is; C

Mitochondria are significant  in the aerobic respiration of glucose in the body. The Krebs cycle occurs in the matrix of the mitochondria when there is available oxygen for aerobic respiration. This is usually preceded by glycolysis that breaks down glucose anaerobically in the cytosol to produce pyruvate. Pyruvate enters the Krebs cycle if there is available oxygen. However, if there are no oxygen, or mitochondria, in this case,  the pyruvate is converted to lactate.
