The SNCC was also known as the "Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee" which was a civil-rights group formed to give younger blacks more of a voice in the civil rights movement after world war 2.

They believed that nonviolence was a tactic, not a way of life, it means: nonviolence is merely a strategy for change, not an ethos for living.

It is based on the motto "the means has to be as pure as the end" in the sense that to thwart violent action one has to stand and point out the immorality of the evil act, it is to fight for one's right without resorting to violence but not to avoid conflict at all costs.
