The answer is D. The author is giving an account of the heroe's actions and abilities. He shows the hero was feared. However, by the end of the excerpt , he mentions the hero was at a time helpless and confused. By the way he starts his narration, we could infer he wants this hero to be remembered and he will probably continue ennumerating his brave deeds.
