The Gotthard tunnel is a 57km (35 miles) long tunnel that took 14 years to be built. It provides a high-speed link between north and south Europe.
It opened in December 2016 and it reduced the travel times, for example, Milan_Zurich travel time without the tunnel was 4:03 hours long and with the tunnel it is 3:26 hours.
The tunnel also increased the passenger crossing in the trans-alpine line in 30%.
