The first of the Chautauqua was organized in 1874 by a methodist minister and a businessman on the shore of Chautauqua Lake in New York. Their roots were formed by the minister two years before that when he trained Sunday school teachers in a summer school format. Those gatherings grew in popularity over time because it was a good choice for families.
Soon after that many institutions copied the way of the assemblies and they were known as daughter Chautauquas.
