To add fractions, we need to have the same denominator, or else we cannot proceed.
[tex] \frac{1}{2} [/tex] + [tex] \frac{2}{3} [/tex]
Least common denominator:
2 × 1 =2 3 × 1 = 3
2 × 2 =4 3 × 2 = 6
2 × 3 =6
6 is the least common denominator
[tex] \frac{1*3}{2*3} [/tex] + [tex] \frac{2*2}{3*2} [/tex]
(multiplying to have the same denominator)
[tex] \frac{3}{6} [/tex] + [tex] \frac{4}{6} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{7}{6} [/tex]
As a mixed number:
[tex]1 \frac{1}{6} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{1}{2} [/tex] + [tex] \frac{2}{3} [/tex]
Least common denominator:
2 × 1 =2 3 × 1 = 3
2 × 2 =4 3 × 2 = 6
2 × 3 =6
6 is the least common denominator
[tex] \frac{1*3}{2*3} [/tex] + [tex] \frac{2*2}{3*2} [/tex]

[tex] \frac{3}{6} [/tex] + [tex] \frac{4}{6} [/tex]
