In 1795 he helped to put down a royalist uprising in Paris. A year later, in 1796 he was leading a French army in Northern Italy and would work to defeat the Austrians in northern Italy and would later march to within 75 miles of Vienna, Austria. He defeated the Austrians and proceeded to negotiate a treaty with them. Following the coup of The Directory in 1799, he went on to become the First Consul. A.
