Being a steamboat man was one of the permanent ambition of boys in Hannibal which upon the arrival of the steamboat brought excitement and awakening among people of Hannibal which previously was a dead town. Apart from being steamboat pilots, boys considered other jobs such as printer apprentice which is shown by Mark Twain who took a job at Joseph Ament who published the Missouri Courier.
