What is convict labor?

Convict labor was a system of unfree labor which was implemented in the British Empire, most notably in Australia from 1788 to 1868. The British transported 162,000 convicts from Great Britain and Ireland to Australia over the course of eighty years, as the American Revolutionary War deprived the British of its earlier penal colonies.

Using Black Codes to their advantage, white people would arrest Black people and use the convicts/arrested people for work. They leased the convicts (hence, convict leasing) and this form of labor was cheap. Since there were many Black Codes, if a convict dies while doing labor, they can just buy others. This was slavery, but cheaper and more plentiful.
