Now that France was against the slaves along with the British and Spanish, they were forced to issue decrees freeing the slaves, abolishing slavery in Saint Domingue. The colony of Saint Domingue legally still belonged to France, thus became subject to Napoleon Bonaparte's growing empire. Hope this helped!
