Originally there were three sets of mysteries: the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries. Pope John Paul II, On October 16, 2002, almost 600 years after the original Mysteries of the rosary were established the pope proposed the addition of a new set of mysteries called the Luminous Mysteries or the Mysteries of Light. The mysteries are:
i) The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan
ii) The Wedding at Cana
iii) The Proclamation of the Kingdom
iv) The Transfiguration of Jesus
v) The Institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper
Pope John Paul II, said that it fully brought out “the Christological depth of the Rosary” by including “the mysteries of Christ’s public ministry between his baptism and his passion.”
