Which of the following is NOT a typical characteristic of most bacterial plasma membranes?
A) composed of a phospholipid bilayer
B) contains proteins
C) is selectively permeable
D) site of energy production
E) contains cholesterol

Respuesta :

Riia

Ans is option E.

Bacteria which are prokaryotic organisms do not contain cholesterol ( a type of sterol) in their plasma membrane. But, it is present in eukaryotic plasma membrane and plays very important role in stabilizing it. Certain prokaryotes may have sterol like molecules known as hopanoids which specifically stabilize their cell membrane.

Also, other mentioned features are present in bacteria. Their plasma membrane is a bilayer of phospholipids which contains integral and peripheral proteins. These proteins impart selective permeability to bacterial cells. Apart from that, bacterial cell membrane has some membrane infoldings known as mesosomes which are analogous to mitochondria of eukaryotes. Mesosomes are involved in cellular respiration which in turn is responsible for energy production.
