Functions of the glycocalyx include all of the following EXCEPT
B) binary fission.
A glycocalyx is a glycoprotein covering, which surrounds the cell membranes of some bacteria, epithelia, and other cells. It is a thick outer covering of the plasma membrane. It composes of strands of sugars and proteins bound together.
Functions of the glycocalyx include all of the following EXCEPT B) binary fission.
Glycocalyx is a hydrated fibrous coating of glycoprotein and glycolipid that covers the cell membranes of many eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells, especially bacteria. The glycocalyx performs several important functions. It protects cells against dehydration and functions as a source of nutrition. When on bacteria cells, it allows the bacteria to establish an infection (increased virulence), mediates cell attachment by the formation of biofilms and it protects the cell against antibacterial agents. Binary fission which is a form of asexual reproduction is not a function of glycocalyx.
