The process by which plants take up nitrogen and absorb it into their organic matter via their roots is called nitrification.

Nitrification is a major part of the nitrogen cycle (this is a process through which nitrogen is constantly being removed from the soil and is returned back to it).

Nitrification occurs through the following means:

  • Saprophytic organisms (decomposers) converts plant and animal wastes into simple substances like carbondioxide and ammonia (nitrogen containing inorganic compounds).
  • Ammonia is converted to nitrites by nitrifying bacteria(Nitrosomonas).
  • Nitrites are converted to nitrates by nitrobacter
  • Nitrates in the soil are then absorbed by plant roots and converted to plant proteins again.

Therefore, plants takes up nitrogen through nitrification process.
