The answer is Assimilation
Explanation: Got it from the original text.
Nitrogen fixation is NOT the answer, It's just the first stage in the Nitrogen cycle.
The process by which plants take up nitrogen and absorb it into their organic matter via their roots is called nitrification.
Nitrification is a major part of the nitrogen cycle (this is a process through which nitrogen is constantly being removed from the soil and is returned back to it).
Nitrification occurs through the following means:
- Saprophytic organisms (decomposers) converts plant and animal wastes into simple substances like carbondioxide and ammonia (nitrogen containing inorganic compounds).
- Ammonia is converted to nitrites by nitrifying bacteria(Nitrosomonas).
- Nitrites are converted to nitrates by nitrobacter
- Nitrates in the soil are then absorbed by plant roots and converted to plant proteins again.
Therefore, plants takes up nitrogen through nitrification process.
