Voting Rights Act 1965

This act was signed by President Lyndon B Johnson.  It outlawed discriminatory voting practices many Southern states used after the Civil War, including literacy tests.  They used these tests to try and prevent African Americans from voting, since many of them did not learn how to read.  This act outlawed this rule.
