Instructions: The following argument argues for owning pets. Read the argument and answer the question that follows: Topic and Question Pets: Should people own pets? Ineffective Argument I love animals so much. I know that animals love humans, so why do people want to ban the ownership of pets? I don’t get it. The first reason I should be able to own a pet is that I love animals. My family loves having a pet. Our dog is like a part of the family. My parents take care of her and take her to the doctor just like they do with me. My mom says, “I don’t know what I would do without little Josie!” I think that people should own pets because they are helpful. My friend just told me about a neighbor whose pet parrot woke her up in the middle of the night when there was a fire. It saved her life. What a lucky person to own a parrot. Honestly, what would we do without our pets? Why is the argument ineffective? In a paragraph of 7–10 complete sentences, explain why the following parts of the argument are ineffective, and how they can be improved: Claim Support Conclusion Clincher Point of View Transitions Submit your review of the argument. Well, first of all the author has no evidence to back up her argument. Also, the argument is all about the author and how she/he wants a pet. In order for the author to fix it they would need some real, stable evidence to back up the reason everyone should have pets.

The text above states that people should have pets when people love animals (since animals love these people) and that animals can save lives by informing them about fires, for example. This argument cannot be considered as effective because it fails to state one thing: raising pets requires dedication, time, money and space.

Loving pets is not enough to have one at home. These animals are not independent and need some to feed them, take them to the doctor, distract them, bathe them and clean up the dirt they make. This requires time and dedication and we know that many people have a very busy daily life and therefore do not have the possibility to set aside time to care for animals that need care.

In addition, animals need their own space where they can play and have fun. In places with little space, animals can cause some accidents, which can hurt them or destroy the structure and furniture of the house.

Furthermore, animals are irrational beings, which means that they cannot reason, so no one should raise a pet, hoping that it will help you in some activity, or even save your life.

In short, just loving animals is not enough to have them at home, a person who wants to have a pet must be able to meet the needs of the animals and understand the limitations they have.
