What is a community service ?
Community service is unpaid labor done by an individual or group of individuals without payment for the benefit and advancement of their local area. Community service can be distinguished from volunteering because it is sometimes required and isn't always done voluntarily. Although there is a chance of realizing personal rewards, actions may be taken for a variety of reasons, such as citizenship requirements, a replacement for criminal justice consequences, requirements of a school or class, and prerequisites for the receipt of certain benefits.
To graduate from high school in some educational jurisdictions in the US, students must complete community service hours. For instance, in order to graduate from some high schools in Washington, students must complete 200 hours of community service. Some Washington school systems, including Seattle Public Schools, make a distinction between community service and "service learning," demanding that students show how their labor has benefited their education.
Many institutions have an unstated criteria for acceptance that includes community service even though it is not formally regarded as such. While some institutions favor employment experience above volunteer work, others insist that in order to graduate, students complete a minimum number of hours of community service. Additionally, some schools have distinctive "community service" courses that grant credit to students who complete a predetermined number of hours of community service. In North America, some fraternities and sororities, academic honor societies among them, demand community service as a prerequisite for initiation and ongoing participation, respectively.
Community service-learning is "about developing leaders as well as acquiring conventional knowledge and skills." People learn how to be effective and how to be effective in regards to what is important to them by performing service while learning at the same time. Their entire experience and the options they have for application may be improved. Community service can expand beyond the simple act of serving by combining it with learning and striking a balance between the two. Service-learning aims to bring about significant change with modest efforts. People are able to not only serve but also have an impact on themselves because it serves as a school, a hands-on learning experience, and a chance to alter the community.
