Man-to-man defense is when a denfensive back covers a specific offensive player to prevent that player from scoring. In zone defense, the defensive player covers a zone rather than a specific player.

The differences between man-to-man defense and zone defense is:

  • In man-to-man defense, a player from the opposition player is sent to mark or cover an opposition and limit his chances of doing anything significant.
  • In zonal defense, the defensive player is responsible for covering a specific zone instead of a particular player and any player who gets into his zone gets covered.

In football or soccer, or even basketball, we can see that there are attacking players who are trying to either score a goal or to assist a teammate to score.

However, it is the work of the defensive player to make sure that such a scenario does not occur.

As a result of this, the defensive players can either use a man to man defense or a zonal defense to make sure that they do not concede a goal
