My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.
Meaning; In Wordsworth's poem, we see sparks of hope. When he sees a rainbow in the sky, it's not merely a beautiful sight to behold. It also symbolizes his childish wonder. Wordsworth maintains a large part of his childish wonder by remaining in awe in the beauty of nature (and encourages his audience to do the same).
The first day I came in, I felt like crying.
I could see all those people who looked like they were dying.
The bell rang, and they all ran away.
I realized they probably had no reason to stay.
This prison was gray, cold and damp,
And the jailers looked a lot like the instructors at summer camp.
All day long we worked, with no chance of rest.
Apparently, we couldn't until we passed a bunch of tests.
Days and days passed with no real change,
Until one day, I realized that I'd let go of all that rage.
The prison seemed lively, the people were kind.
I was laughing, smiling, and no one seemed to mind.
Turns out the prison was actually a nice place,
And the news turned upside down the frown that had been in my face.
This is a narrative poem because it tells a story. The story tells us of how the speaker changed his mind about school, and how he went from hating it to loving it. The story contains a symbol, because the "prison" that is mentioned is meant to stand as a way to represent school. The poem also contains a colour, as the student tells us that school was "gray."
