a Physician Assistant is a person who is able to practice medicine (including diagnosis and treatment therapies under the supervision of a physician); they must be able to have the basic medical and clinical science knowledge, have specialization in preparation in the fields of family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, genera surgery, psychiatry, and behavioral medicine. They are able to deliver health care services to home-bound patients, rural populations, and undeserved populations (very remote areas).
How does it relate to STEM?
They must have a strong background in science to understand cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, anatomy, pathology, embryology, microbiology, and pharmacology, among others. They must be able to utilize critical thinking in research, understand statistics to interpret medical literature that is based on scientific evidence.
They do not have to have the same amount of training as a doctor would, but as a Physician Assistant, they are able to do the same function as a doctor to a certain degree; i.e. prescribe medicines up to a certain type or miligram.
