Self-monitoring is in other words holding back your emotions for the better good. Usually, people who can't hold their excitement, temper, or any other emotions, need to self-monitor themselves.
Examples:
1.) I hadn't eaten for almost the whole day, but when I saw hot ready food, I almost leaped out but understood to behave myself and I waited till everything is ready. By self-monitoring myself, I respected others and kept my temper to myself. When everything was ready, we sat down and ate together.
2.) I went early to the morning to school. When I came in my class a tall kid started to make fun of me. He kept on bullying me and called me names. I was mad and angry as hot as a boiling kettle ready to steam out. But by self-monitoring myself, I relaxed and kept my temper to myself. When my teacher came, I told everything what happened.

I self-monitored myself when a random stranger cracked my nerve. Doing so caused less trouble for everyone.
