Self-awareness in other words is taking extra precautions whenever you think of something before you act. Thinking through if your choice is right or even safe.
Examples:
1.) A sudden fire from the outside started to spread on to our house. I ran downstairs to the entrance door. But before opening it, I paused and gain self-awareness. I felt the scorching heat behind the door and understood that if I opened it, all that heat and temperature will rush straight on me. Knowing that, I decided to take the back entrance.
2.) I was playing catch with my friend with a football. When I was about to through the ball back to him, I paused and gained self-awareness. I saw a young lady passing by with her kids so I refrained from throwing. I waited after the lady and her kids passed, then I throw the ball back.

1.) Whenever I cross the cross-walks, I always check every direction before walking across. I am always aware of the cars and trucks that might pass by.
