There are different protocols for providing CPR to adults, children, and infants. The child is considered to be between the ages of 1 to 8 and protocol for child CPR is, generally you should first start with CPR and then cal 911, if the child doesn’t respond and isn’t breathing you should carefully place the child on his/her back, place the heel of one hand over the lower third of the breastbone, lift the fingers to ensure pressure is not applied over the ribs, as they are fragile and prone to fracture, and position yourself vertically above the chest and, with your arm straight, compress the breastbone so you push it down about 2 inches, which is approximately one-third of the chest diameter. Because a child’s airway is more fragile than an adult’s, use caution when providing rescue breaths and be careful not to tilt the head back too far.
