Multiplication and addition operations are associative. This can be obtained by understanding what associative property is.

What is associative property?

Addition or multiplication of 3 or more numbers gives same sum or product without depending on the order of the numbers.

  • For example, (2+3)+4 = 5+4 = 9 is same as 2+(3+4) = 2+7 = 9

Similarly, (5×4)×2=20×2=40 is same as 5×(4×2)=5×8=40

Subtraction and division does not have associative property.

  • For example, (14 - 3) -2 and 14 -(3 - 2)

                             11 - 2 and 14 - 1

                                   9 and 13 are not equal

                      (18÷6)÷3 and 18÷(6÷3)

                             3÷3 and 18÷2

                                  1 and 9 are not equal.

Hence Multiplication and addition operations are associative.
