During the Industrial Revolution the workers were mainly European immigrants. They did hard labor in factories and sweat shops under awful conditions making items such as shirtwaists, hats, etc. They lived in cramped tenements and sometimes went to work in them. New immigrants accepted these jobs because they needed to earn a living somehow. The factory owners didn't treat their workers well because they were greedy. They cared more about making a profit rather than the well-being of their workers.
