Remember that plural words, that describe singular objects (i.e. pants, scissors, etc.) still use plural verbs. 

ex. The pants ARE dirty; The scissors ARE rusty...

Remember that a group who is collectively doing the same thing, is a singular group; and receives a singular verb. 

ex. The class is going to Disney World . . . The Senate is voting today.

Remember that when two things/groups/ideas are mentioned, and are joined with the word "and" the verb is plural. But when "or" or "but" is used; the verb is singular.

ex. Jack and Jill ARE going to Texas. . .  
ex. Jack or Jill IS going to Texas.
