Fathers were marginalized as pregnant women received more money if they remained single and had more babies. This has had a profound impact on society with out-of-wed birthrates and fatherless homes exploding.

Funding problems, war on poverty and fear of communism were the problems that affected the Great society.

Funding the Great Society's initiative had been difficult since 1968 as the funds had been diverted to pay for the Vietnam War. Ronald Reagan's very conservative view of the role of state and federal spending, coupled with the Republican Congress's hesitation in continuing its welfare program, has significantly reduced funds for the Great society. The tremendous increase in military resources during this period further rang the bells of a series of domestic programs 20 years ago.

It has been said that the 'war of poverty' efforts did not achieve a substantial reduction in the rate of poverty and that this program locked poor people into lives of government dependency.
