Figure 1. Model of water movement through the xylem, with magnified models of water movement in the stem and leaf. Which statement describes how water is pulled up through the xylem to the leaves of the plant?

Answer:

Water is pulled up through xylem to the leaves of the plants by the process of transpiration. Following steps take place during this process:

  • It is known as the transpiration stream
  • The water enter the roots from the soil by the osmosis
  • After that the water either enter the cell wall of the xylem or goes to the cortex cell
  • Next, as the water from the leaves is being  evaporated ,a negative pressure is created at this end(leaf end of the xylem) ,a positive pressure at the other end of the xylem(root end)
  • This change in the potential  gradient causes the water to move up the xylem to the leaf through diffusion .
