how this can be true.

A pure iron frying pan will have the same density as a pure iron anything under the same conditions, however pure iron is rarely used to make things. As their is carbon and traces of various metals, so the density will typically be slightly different, you can lower the density of the item with slightly higher density by heating it but leaving the lower density item cooler. Density is property of material that is independent of shape, volume, size and mass.
