Pandas have what appears to be a sixth digit on each of their forepaws. Some refer to this as the pandas’ "thumb". Actually, this thumb is really just a modified wrist bone (sesamoid bone). Pandas use their thumb much like humans use their thumb, to better hold objects. For the panda, they hold onto stalks of bamboo and are able to strip the leaves off the stalk so that they may eat the leaves.
