If the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increases, the Earth's temperature will increase accordingly.

The ability of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide to absorb heat from the sun and then re-radiate the heat back to the earth's surface leads to the warming of the earth. In other words, greenhouse gases causes global warming.

The amount of warming the earth gets is, therefore, dependent on the concentration of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The capacity of the earth's temperature to increase with increased concentration of greenhouse gases on the atmosphere is one of the reasons there have been calls to reduce emission rates all over the world.

The increase in the temperature of the earth comes with consequences, most of which are negative. these include:

  • melting of the polar ice caps
  • rise in sea levels and destruction of coastal habitats
  • desertification
  • erratic climate
  • etc
