BACKGROUND
Natural resources owned by a country do not always bring blessings. The natural wealth of the Indonesian people is able to be an attraction for Europeans and Japanese. Spaniards, Portuguese, British, Dutch began to arrive in Indonesia, followed by Japanese. The purpose of their arrival there are 3, namely Glory, Gold, and Gospel. At first they were only interested in the character of taking spices, but later developed to control and exploit all natural resources and human resources owned by Indonesia. Human resources are used to meet cheap labor. The exploitation of natural resources and human resources is able to fill their empty financial cash.
So that these countries began to formulate ways to control the region with a political and economic approach, many policies issued by the Dutch and British governments in various fields that gave positive and negative effects on the lives of the Indonesian people. Dutch defeat of Japan did not bring good influence for Indonesia to be independent. That was caused during the Japanese occupation.
All natural resources and human resources were exploited on a large scale to support Japan in the Asia Pacific war. Therefore, it can be said that the arrival of foreign nationals to Indonesia was motivated by the existence of an understanding of imprealism and colonialism which caused the Indonesian people to experience material and psychological losses. Material losses can always be replaced but psychological injuries are a legacy for each generation
ARRIVAL OF EUROPE IN INDONESIA
1. BACKGROUND OF EUROPEAN ARRIVALS TO INDONESIA
Dalm meets the needs of food and daily needs, many Europeans bring in raw from outside, such as fruits, spices, wool, porcelain, and others. As a result, the prices of these goods are very expensive in the European market.
One of the most needed needs is spices. Spices are very useful as medicines, flavorings, and preservatives. Indonesia, especially Maluku, has been known as a spice-producing daerh. Europeans want to buy these spices directly in Indonesia.
There are several reasons why Europeans like spices from Indonesia. First, spices from Indonesia have better quality. Second, the price is cheaper compared to prices in Europe.
The arrival of the western nations in Indonesia began with the exploration of the ocean in search of spices. The first Portuguese to go on a shipping expedition looking for a way to source the spices was Bartolomeus DIAZ. But the first expedition that made it to the Makaka Strait was an expedition under the leadership of DIEGO LOPEZ DE SEQUERE from the Portuguese and only on a voyage led by ALFONSO D 'ALBUQUERQU, Malacca was overrun.
Since the last decade of the 16th century, Dutch sailors have managed to find a trade route to Asia that the Portuguese kept secret since the beginning of the 16th century. In 1595, a Dutch trading company named Compagnie van Verre financed a trade expedition to the archipelago.
The expedition, led by Cornelis de Houtman, carried four ships. After traveling for fourteen months, on June 22, 1596, they successfully landed at the Port of Banten. This was the starting point for the Dutch arrival in the archipelago. The first visit was unsuccessful due to Cornelis deHoutman's arrogant attitude.
On May 1, 1598, the Amsterdam Company sent its trading group back to the Archipelago under its leadership
Jacob van Neck, van Heemskerck and van Waerwijck. By learning from Cornelis deHoutman's mistakes, they managed to win the sympathy of the Banten authorities so that the Dutch traders were allowed to trade in the Port of Banten. The three ships returned to their country with
full charge. Meanwhile, other ships continue their journey to Maluku to look for cloves and nutmeg.
