The English monarchy was not a monarchy of absolute power like the French and others in Europe. In the mid 17th century, Charles I had it out with parliament, got into a civil war and eventually had his head chopped off over the power of the King vs parliament and England was then a Republic for a decade or two with Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. After Cromwell's death, the monarchy was restored but came back with tremendously reduced powers and was not a divine right absolute monarchy.
