Answer in your own words in 3 to 5 complete sentences. Describe the difference between polar & tropical air masses (include where each air mass forms & their general temperature). (5 points)

Respuesta :

Explanation:

Polar air mass is found in the poles of the earth while tropical air mass is located within the tropics. The polar air mass is usually cooler and denser than the tropical air mass which is warm and less dense.

Due to the spherical shape of the earth, the sun rays ‘hit’ different latitudes differently. Firstly, the sun rays hit the tropics at more or less right angles while the higher you go to the poles the more the oblique angle the sun rays hit. More so, the density of sun rays per area is higher in the tropic that the poles hence the air in the tropics gets heated more and faster than the polar air mass.

Therefore usually, the atmospherics circulation of air through winds is due to these differences in air mass properties in the globe. When the tropic air mass gets less dense, it is displaced by cooler denser air from the poles. When the tropic air rises, it moves towards the pole and gets cooler and denser at it gets closer to the poles. It sinks as it loses energy in the cooler regions.  The air mass from the poles now in the tropics (now the tropical air mass) get heated and the cycle continues.
