This condition involves progressive demyelination of neurons in the CNS accompanied by the destruction of oligodendrocytes. As a result, the conduction of nerve impulses is disrupted, leading to impaired sensory perception and motor coordination.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the nervous system which is characterized by the demyelination of the brain and spinal cord nerve cells progressively.
Due to the demyelination, there is a lack of coordinated communication amongst the various parts of the body as the nerve impulses get disrupted and hence, there is impairment of sensory perception, as well as motor coordination along with other symptoms such as mental and psychiatric problems.
Along with the demyelination, there is further destruction of the oligodendrocytes which further contributes to the severity of the disease.
Currently, there is no definite cure for the disease.
