If you have a map of a fairly large area and it has evenly-spaced horizontal lines crossing it, there's a pretty good chance that the lines are "parallels of latitude".

Each line says that all the points on that one are located at the same angle north (or south) of the equator.

Pick one line and look carefully along it, or right next to one end of it, and there should be a number. That number is the angle between the equator and any point on that line.

Angles are not distances, but on the Earth's surface, you can use them to figure out a distance. If you move STRAIGHT north or south, the distance between two points is about 69.1 miles for EACH degree of difference in their two angles.
