French Protestants. With the revocation of the Edict of
Nantes in October 1685, widespread persecution of Protestants occurred. They
were forced to flee France and move to neighboring countries to escape imprisonment
and torture. Opinion of Louis XIV among other countries was at an all- time low
as a result.
