Means of persuasion, as the term itself would suggest, are used to persuade someone into believing the speaker/writer. Ethos means that the author is using evidence to support his or her claims; logos means that there are some logical conclusions there; pathos refers to the use of emotions and eliciting feelings in the audience.

There is another means of persuasion, although it is not as common as the other three - kairos (time and place).

Topos is not one of these means - it just refers to a location.
