Among many people, Prince Duan a state man of the late Qing dynasty was the most spoken out about his disapproval of the reforms. Prince Duan had opposed the reforms as he suspected a foreign plot being at play with alot of Western ideas, including their military tactics, education and political ways being suggested for implementation and was imminent about his need to expell all foreigners from China completely.

As such made sure to execute and imprison all those that were in support of the reforms and kept King Guang Xu under house arrest until his death.
