Parens Patriae, which in Latin means "parent of the nation", refers to the public policy power of the state to act as the parent of any child (or individual who needs protection) when there's abuse or neglect from parents, informal caretakers or legal guardians. The Parens Patriae power is used to take someone into custody, meaning that a person is not acting on his/her own best interest.
