The historic boulevard called Broadway (originally the Wickquasgeck Trail) slices diagonally across the entire length of Manhattan. In the early twentieth century, the Broadway Theater District - "________" - as Shep Friedman dubbed it in 1902 - ran along Broadway between 14th Street and 34th Street. Today, all but a few Broadway theaters, the majority of them erected during a theater construction boom that ended with the Great Depression, lie within an area circumscribed by 42nd Street and 52nd Street at the south and north ends, respectively, and by 8th Avenue and Broadway on the west and east sides.
