Middle Kingdom was a period most known in Ancient Egypt. It lasted from 1975 to 1640 BC. During this period, the whole of Egypt was united under Pharaoh's rule (Eleventh, Twelfth, Thirteenth and Fourteenth Dynasties). Thebes was the capital at that time.

During Thirteenth Dynasty, the pharaoh's power started to decline, which gave a motivation for kings from northern Egypt to split from the rest of Egypt.  Archaeological evidence suggests that there was a large scale invasion of Egypt from Syria by the Hyksos, a diverse origin people possibly from Western Asia.

As Middle Kingdom fell, the Second Intermediate Period began. Hyksos ruled the northern Egypt for the following period.
