  • The Confederate States of America was a union of eleven southern states of the United States. Owing to the contrasts with the north, they formed their own country in the south in 1861. It first seceded from South Carolina in December 1860; in the beginning of 1861 it was followed by:  Alabama,  Florida,  Georgia,  Louisiana,  Mississippi and  Texas.
  • At the outbreak of the Secession War between April and June 1861, they were joined by:  Arkansas,  North Carolina, Tennessee in  Virginia.
  • The States of Missouri and Kentucky also joined the Confederacy, but were immediately occupied by the United States Army after its secession in November 1861 and the secessionist governments were expelled.
  • The capital was originally Montgomery, and since July 1861 Richmond. The first and only president was Jefferson Davis, the Confederacy also had its own constitution, the military, the government, Congress and the currency, the Confederate dollar. After the defeat of the war and the unconditional surrender of April 1865, the Confederacy ceased to exist. The breakaway countries merged back to the US.
