The prophase is the phase of the Karyokinesis during which the nucleus prepares itself to divide its content especially the chromosomes.

The prophase takes place in mitosis as well as in meiosis in two sub-phases that is prophase I and II.

The prophase I differ from the prophase I is that no the chromatids of the chromosomes intertwine and form a synaptic structure where crossing over or recombination takes place which is absent in the prophase.  

The prophase I is quite complex than the prophase as the prophase I take place in five substages.
