Kennedy used rhetoric to advance his purpose as can be seen below:

Kennedy made use of rhetoric to persuade the American people that people who have been discriminated against must not try resort to savagery to get retribution.

• He suggested that they should instead show sympathy and understanding so as to bring harmony.
