Is exposure to a mutagen the only way mutations can occur? Explain why or why not, and cite an example to support your answer

Respuesta :

Mutagen in NOT the only way mutations can occur.

Explanation:

DNA replication is not usually perfect with 100% precision. Mistakes are sometime made by DNA polymerase, on rare occasions, in the process of replication that even get left out by error-correction mechanisms.  This, therefore, can sometimes cause point mutations in the DNA. The error rate is however very low at approximately 10⁻⁹ to 10⁻¹¹ errors per base pair. Therefore mutagens are NOT the only cause of mutations in DNA.
