After Hitler's failed coup and imprisonment, he realized that the only way to truly seize control of Germany was through political means. In 1929, Hitler established the Nazi party and campaigned on the promise of solving the economic problems of the country. At this time, unemployment was rising rapidly, with millions of people without jobs. Hitler promised to remedy this, and by 1932 the Nazi party had over 800.000 members. The Nazi party soon gained a majority in the Reichstag and Hitler was its undeniable leader. In 1933 he demanded absolute power from the President Hindenburg and on March 23, 1933 managed to seize total control of the German governmental system. He suspended the German constitution and seized ownership of all aspects of industry in an effort to reform and revolutionize Germany to reflect his own political ideas. He was strongly supported by the German population as they believed he would repair the economy and create a more wealthy and prosperous state.
