Relative Dating - Compares age of rock to others

                           - uses law of superposition

Absolute Dating - provides a specific time frame

                             - based on elements found in rocks

Explanation: My notes from Comparing relative and absolute dating.

Each phrase about dating the age of rocks into the correct category provides a specific time.

What is Relative Dating?

In general terms, Relative dating can be classified as the science of determining the relative order of past events. Which we can know without necessarily determining their absolute age.

In geological terms, Relative Dating can be rock or superficial deposits, fossils and lithologies which can be used to correlate one stratigraphic column with another.

Prior to the introduction of radiometric dating in the early 20th century, which provided a means of absolute dating, archaeologists and geologists used relative dating to determine ages of materials.

Relative Dating can only determine the sequential order in which a series of events, occurred, not when they occurred, it remains a useful technique. Relative Dating can be observed in geology from the 17th century to the early 20th century.

What is Absolute Dating?

Absolute dating is the process of determining an age on a specified chronology in archaeology and geology. Scientists, prefer the terms chronometric or calendar dating.

Absolute dating gives a numerical age or range, in contradiction with relative dating, which implements events in sequence without any measure of the age between events.

Absolute Dating is usually rely on the physical, chemical, and life properties of the materials of artifacts, buildings, or other items that have been modified by humans and by historical associations with materials with known dates (such as coins and historical records).

Absolute Dating can be done by implementing techniques that include radiocarbon dating of wood or bones, potassium-argon dating, and trapped-charge dating methods such as thermoluminescence dating of glazed ceramics.

The primary methods that can be used for absolute dating includes using the radioactive decay of elements trapped in rocks or minerals, including isotope systems from younger organic remains (radiocarbon dating with to systems such as uranium–lead dating that allow determination of absolute ages for some of the aged rocks on Earth.
