As the property of magnet states that like poles tend to attract and unlike poles thrust back from each other.
Also the magnetic force is dependent to the distance between them in inverse proportion.
So when two magnets are kept in the position as shown in the figure then the unlike poles (B and C) and (A and D) attract with one another.
As the distance between B and C is minimum, the magnetic force will be maximum.
The magnet will be attached with B and C being in one point.
Similarly the distance of A and D is maximum hence the force is minimum.
